Using Del.icio.us

Store all your bookmarks safely online so you can get to them from any PC

The web continues to grow and it’s not easy to keep track of all the sites you’ve bookmarked in your browser. If you use more than one PC or rely on internet cafes and public terminals you can’t really carry your list of favourites with you. Yet if you store them online, you can always access them from any computer that has an internet connection.

Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking service which enables you to upload existing bookmarks and categorise them using tags. You can keep them private for just your use or share them with friends or the whole world. This means that you can benefit from other people’s recommendations. Sites that have been bookmarked thousands of times are likely to be more useful to you than those favoured by only one other user. Thus del.icio.us isn’t just a storage service; it enables you to get some idea of the quality of certain sites before you visit them. You can use the popular and recent links to find new or well-liked sites.

The walkthrough demonstrates how to sign up for the service and how to upload your existing bookmarks. For this to work, you need to have exported them from your browser in a bookmarks.htm file. You can do this in Internet Explorer by choosing Tools, Menu Bar, then File, Import and Export, Export Favourites and completing the wizard. In Firefox choose Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks followed by File, Export and save the resulting file.

Once you have a list of bookmarks in del.icio.us, you can begin sharing them. By default all imported bookmarks are private until you share them. When you add a new bookmark directly to del.icio.us, you’re given the choice whether to share it or keep it private. Next to each entry in your bookmarks are links to edit, delete or share it if it isn’t already shared. Click Share, followed by Yes to share a link with the world. To change a bookmark, click Edit. You can do this to add or remove tags. These are keywords that you can use to group your bookmarks together. Click Save to complete editing that bookmark.
