Mojopac Freedom

Carry your desktop around in your pocket. Joe Cassels reveals the true meaning of Pocket PC.

If you want portable computing you need to buy a laptop, palmtop or smart phone, right?Public computers are all very well, but you can't access your own desktop with your favourite applications and settings tweaked just the way you like them can you? Thanks to Mojopac Freedom, all you need is a USB drive like a flash drive or iPod to do precisely that. You can carry your desktop, including important files and your familiar programs around with you and it will all fit neatly in your pocket. When you get access to a PC or laptop, all you have to do is plug it in and opt to launch MojoPac. Once you've logged in, you get your own personal desktop run from the portable drive and you can get to work without touching the settings on the host computer.

This very ingenious set up is ideal for students, travellers or anyone else with limited funds and a need to move around a lot. MojoPac is available for download from www.mojopac.com and it comes in free or deluxe editions. The free one is more than adequate for personal use. The walkthrough demonstrates how to get started with it. You need to launch the set up program on a Windows XP computer with your USB drive connected. You can then install the program to work from this drive.

Once you've installed MojoPac, you can plug your portable drive into any Windows XP computer and get your own dedicated desktop that runs directly from the removable drive. It doesn't affect the host computer at all. Once you've logged in, you can access your files and install what programs you want to use to the C: drive. This is the MojoPac drive on your USB device and not the local hard drive on the computer. When you've shut down your desktop in the usual way, you can disconnect your drive and go and use it on a different PC.

The desktop is identical to a Windows XP one, complete with taskbar and start menu. however, the default wallpaper is different and you'll see a MojoPac bar to the top of the screen.

Pack up your desktop

Install MojoPac on a portable drive and start using the desktop

2
Once all the files have been copied over, you need to set a username and password for MojoPac. Opt to install MojoPac Freedom, which is free for personal use and provide another username and password along with an email address to register with MojoPac.

3
Select the files, folders and settings that you want to copy to your MojoPac installation and click Finish. Start MojoPac from your USB drive and log in. You now have a windows XP desktop running directly from your USB drive.
