Share other people's iTunes libraries

Sharing music just got easier! Joe Cassels uses Mojo to browse other iTunes libraries on a network.

It’s good to share and many people love to swap music on disc or simply by listening on an MP3 player with shared headphones. However, it’s also possible to share the tracks in your iTunes library with friends or family on the same network. You just need the free Mojo application which you can get from http://www.deusty.com/software/download_mojo.php.

It’s worth noting at this point that copying music covered by copyright is illegal and that copyright law is notoriously complex. In many cases simply copying music to your PC is viewed as an infraction of copyright, so consult a lawyer if you’re considering doing anything with copyright material.

Mojo for Windows works on the local network only, which provides a sensible limitation as you’re unlikely to share tunes beyond the scope of your own home. However, it is possible to get the program working across the internet if you set up a virtual private network (VPN). You can do this with the free Hamachi software, https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en if you want to expand the scope of your music sharing. This enables you to add other PCs on the internet to your local network, so it’s important to only use it with people you trust. If in doubt, just use Mojo locally.

To use Mojo, you’ll need to install it on two or more computers that also have iTunes installed. You’ll need the .NET framework installed too. When you install the software it also opts to install the Bonjour service to enable easy communication. You won’t be able to use Mojo without it, so agree to its installation.

Once you’re up and running the walkthrough demonstrates how easy it is to use Mojo to browse each other’s libraries. You can opt to listen to tracks streamed from your friend’s library or to download them to your own one so you can listen to it even if your friend’s PC is turned off. Any tunes you download to your library are added to a Mojo playlist for that friend so you can find them easily. You can share audio books and even video via Mojo and iTunes this way.

Share an iTunes library
Listen to whatever your friend has stored on his or her PC.

1
Download and install Mojo on both your computer and the one your friend is using. When you first run the program it polls the local network to find other PCs running iTunes and Mojo. Any it finds are displayed in the list.

2
Once you and your friend have set up the system correctly, you can browse their iTunes library. Just double click the username or select it and click Browse. You can navigate their version of iTunes using the categories in their library.

3
Tracks that you already have in your version of iTunes are displayed in grey. Those in red are protected by DRM. Select a black coloured track and click Play to listen to it or choose Download to download it to your own iTunes library.
